Beginning September 24, 2026, BabaTap will transition its Companion Calls service to TapSenior as part of a new direction designed to create clearer roles for both organizations and expand access to meaningful social connection for seniors. BabaTap will no longer provide Companion Calls as one of its core services. Instead, BabaTap will focus on in-person companion care through its network of BabaTap Pros, while TapSenior will develop Companion Calls for Seniors as a community-focused program offered completely free of charge to participating seniors. BabaTap will support this transition by sharing its experience and assisting with the development of training for the TapSenior volunteers who participate in the program. This change is not simply about moving a service from one organization to another. It reflects a broader goal of making friendly human connection more accessible while allowing BabaTap and TapSenior to each develop a clearer and more focused purpose.

The idea behind the TapSenior Companion Calls program is simple: many seniors may appreciate having someone who takes the time to call, listen and have a friendly conversation. Families are often busy, adult children may live in another city or province, and some seniors may have fewer opportunities for regular social interaction than they once did. Technology can make communication easier, but technology alone cannot replace meaningful human conversation. TapSenior therefore intends to build a volunteer-based network that connects participating seniors with people who are willing to contribute their time through friendly telephone conversations and social check-ins. The purpose is not to provide medical advice, counselling, emergency assistance or professional healthcare. The purpose is human connection: giving seniors another opportunity to talk, share stories, discuss everyday life and know that someone has made time to connect with them.
A central principle of the new program is accessibility. TapSenior plans to provide Companion Calls to seniors completely free of charge. A senior should not need to purchase a care package or pay an hourly companion fee simply because they would enjoy a friendly conversation. By developing the program around volunteers, TapSenior aims to create a community in which people can contribute something extremely valuable without necessarily contributing money: their time. College and university students, working professionals and other community members may have very different backgrounds and schedules, but many can still contribute a small amount of time regularly. A conversation that represents a relatively small commitment for a volunteer may become a meaningful part of a senior’s week. As the program develops, TapSenior’s goal is to create a structured and responsible system that makes those connections easier to establish and maintain.
BabaTap’s role in this new direction will be to support TapSenior with knowledge and training experience while concentrating BabaTap’s own operations on in-person companion services. Working with seniors requires more than simply being friendly. Volunteers need to understand appropriate boundaries, respectful communication, privacy, what they should and should not discuss, and what to do if a senior raises a concern that is outside the volunteer’s role. Clear training is particularly important because Companion Calls are intended to provide social connection rather than healthcare, counselling, crisis intervention or professional caregiving. BabaTap will therefore support TapSenior in developing a framework that helps volunteers understand the purpose of the program and communicate with seniors respectfully and consistently. TapSenior will be responsible for developing and operating its volunteer Companion Call program as its own community initiative.
The transition also allows BabaTap to establish a much clearer identity around in-person companion care. BabaTap Pros will continue to support seniors and families through available non-medical services such as Companion Visits, Hospital Companion, Grocery Shopping and Errands, Technology Help, Meal Preparation and Light Home Support. These services involve a person physically travelling to support a senior and therefore operate differently from a volunteer telephone program. By separating the two models, seniors and families can more easily understand what each organization provides. TapSenior will focus its Companion Call initiative on free, volunteer-based telephone connection, while BabaTap will focus on paid, in-person companion support delivered through BabaTap Pros. This distinction also helps ensure that volunteer activity and paid professional opportunities are not presented as the same type of service.
The new structure can also create meaningful opportunities for volunteers, particularly students and people who want to contribute to their communities but may not have the ability to volunteer in person. A volunteer may be able to participate from home and dedicate scheduled time to speaking with a senior. For students studying areas such as social work, community services, psychology, health sciences, nursing or other people-focused fields, conversations with older adults may also provide valuable exposure to intergenerational communication and community engagement. However, the central purpose of the program remains service to seniors rather than professional training for volunteers. TapSenior wants to create a culture in which volunteers recognize that listening, patience, reliability and respect can make a meaningful contribution to another person’s day.
Some volunteers may eventually discover that they enjoy supporting seniors and would like to provide in-person companion services as paid work. In those circumstances, they may separately choose to apply to become a BabaTap Pro. The two pathways will remain distinct. Participating in the TapSenior Companion Calls program will not require a volunteer to become a BabaTap Pro, and volunteering with TapSenior should not be understood as unpaid work for BabaTap. Likewise, becoming a TapSenior volunteer will not automatically qualify someone to provide paid BabaTap services. Anyone interested in becoming a BabaTap Pro will need to follow BabaTap’s separate application, verification, training and service requirements. Maintaining this distinction is important to both projects as they grow.
For seniors and families, the relationship between the two programs is intended to make it easier to find an appropriate level of support. A senior who simply wants friendly conversation may begin with TapSenior’s free Companion Calls program without needing an in-person service. If that senior or their family later decides that in-person assistance or companionship would be useful, they can independently explore paid BabaTap services available in their area. Similarly, someone who first discovers BabaTap while searching for companion care may realize that what they currently need is simply regular social conversation by telephone. BabaTap can then make them aware of TapSenior’s free Companion Calls program. The objective is not to turn every free call into a paid service. The objective is to make different forms of senior connection easier to understand and access while allowing each organization to remain focused on its own mission.
This transition also supports TapSenior’s broader vision of building a community around seniors rather than operating solely as a traditional service provider. Companion Calls can become one part of an ecosystem that encourages social connection, community participation and stronger relationships between seniors, volunteers and organizations that want to support older adults. Over time, TapSenior hopes that the program can bring together volunteers from different communities and generations while giving seniors another simple way to remain socially connected. The telephone remains particularly valuable because participation does not necessarily require a senior to learn a new app, travel to an activity or use complicated technology. Sometimes the most accessible form of connection is still a familiar voice and a genuine conversation.
Starting September 24, 2026, BabaTap will therefore move forward with a more focused role centered on in-person companion care, while supporting TapSenior as it develops its new free Companion Calls for Seniors program. The two organizations will have different responsibilities, different service models and different purposes, but they will share an important belief: meaningful human connection can make a difference in the everyday lives of older adults. BabaTap will continue building a network of people who can be there in person when seniors need companionship and practical non-medical support, while TapSenior will work toward making friendly telephone companionship accessible without cost. Through volunteer participation, thoughtful training and a clear separation between free community support and paid in-person services, the new TapSenior Companion Calls program is intended to create something simple but meaningful: more opportunities for seniors to hear a friendly voice, have a genuine conversation and stay connected to the communities around them.
